YYC Flood 2013

The last two days have been pretty incredible as Calgary is experiencing unprecedented flooding. 28 neighborhoods in the city have been evacuated and downtown Calgary is shut down. All day long I have been watching video footage and photos of the unbelievable scenes of different parts of the city submerged in water but I haven’t seen anything from Fish Creek Provincial Park so I have taken it upon myself to fill this gap.

Check out these three photos contrasting the changes. The first autumn photo was taken on September 9, 2010 and depicts the scars from the flood in 2005 that changed the course of the creek from its original path with which I had grown up with. Then fast forward to Thursday night (June 20) after heavy rains caused the beginning of the evacuations. The second photos shows what the creek looked like by 9PM. Jump forward 25 hours to 10PM Friday night (June 21) at which point the authorities believe the water levels have crested. Look how much has changed over a short span of time!

My prayers go out to the folks who have lost their homes and possibly everything they have spent their lives working for.
